SYNOPSIS
Baltimore, Maryland is an enigma. It is neither exclusively northern or southern. A city overshadowed by eminent neighbors with a reputation that belies its contributions to American history and culture. Baltimore 100 Years explores the city’s unique past to reappraise its role and impact on twentieth century American life.

Baltimore 100 Years is a documentary film series that explores the city’s unique past to reappraise its critical impact on twentieth-century American life. It is a quintessentially American story with the city of Baltimore cast in the lead role. Baltimore 100 Years is both an analysis and a celebration of a unique history that few American cities can claim. The series offers more than nostalgia; it is a journey to better understand the ground upon which we stand, and initiate a conversation about where we might go from here.

Stanley Preston is an award winning filmmaker and owner of Maryland Motion Pictures an independent film and video production company he founded in 1989. He has worked as a writer, director, cinematographer and editor on hundreds of local, regional and national documentary films and commercial projects. In 2019 his documentary feature Doctor C., screened at film festivals across the country, winning several awards including Best Documentary Feature at the Anaheim International Film Festival. Philip J. Merrill is a historian, author, and founder of Nanny Jack & Company LLC, an archives and consulting agency specializing in projects that illuminate the African American experience through artifacts, oral history and research. He was appointed to the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture in 2023 by Governor Wes Moore. He was voted City Paper’s Baltimore’s Best Historian in 2001, and has served as an expert contributor for television series, on Discovery Channel, Maryland Public Television, and PBS.
