SYNOPSIS

A socially-rooted police procedural, a race-against-time thriller, as well as a portrait of Nepal, a complex society on the edge of a new future.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Raja is set in backdrop of massive protests. I’ve chosen the police procedural genre to tell this story because it will allow the audience to explore the local community with our detective, seeing through her eyes as she learns the truth behind the violent protests.  I believe this exchange of point-of-views could become something beautiful, not only for Nepalis, but for people around the world as race, discrimination, and national borders are topics of great import for communities everywhere right now.

KEY CREW

Deepak Rauniyar - director / producer

Deepak Rauniyar (b. 1978, Saptari, Nepal) became the first Nepali filmmaker to compete at a prestigious international film festival. His debut Highway world premiered at the Berlinale 2012 and also played at Locarno Film Festival. His second feature, White Sun has surpassed the festival success of his debut, with participating over 70 film festivals including Venice, Toronto, Rotterdam, Busan, New Directors/ New Films and Palm Springs, where the filmmaker took his first significant awards.  Rauniyar was labeled as one of "9 New Directors You need to watch" by the New York Times. And Nepal selected White Sun as it's Official Submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.  Rauniyar is co-founder of Aadi Production along with his wife / actor Asha Magrati, and an alumnus of the Rotterdam, Toronto, Berlinale Talents and as well as the Cannes - Cinéfondation program.   He served a member of official competition of jury at Sydney film festival in 2017.
