LOGLINE

Our Daughters flips the narrative on transracial adoption and provides a rarely seen look at adoption through an immigrant lens.

SYNOPSIS

Lakshmi Iyer, an Indian immigrant desperate for motherhood, and Brandy Stein, a single White mother seeking a home for her twins, cross paths unexpectedly. They venture into uncharted territory while exploring openness in adoption for the sake of the twin daughters they share through adoption. Both take big risks and make surprising choices.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Drawn to stories at the intersection of race, religion, immigration, and family, Jeyaram’s documentary provides an immigrant’s perspective on interracial adoption in America while examining the development of cultural dexterity in familial settings.

Using 6 years of archival material and 4 years of observational footage, Our Daughters reveals the complex realities of open adoption where birth and adoptive parents are in close contact.
