LOGLINE

A Latinx story that explores the changes a couple faces when they learn they are expecting a child.

SYNOPSIS

When Catalina and Germán announce to their relatives that they are going to have a baby, they set out on individual journeys to confront their past wounds that will challenge who they are and the life that they have built together.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Catalina is a successful ophthalmologist. Germán is a co-manager of an independent theater group. The two live a blissful life together in Bogotá. Then they find out they are going to be parents. When they make the announcement to Germán’s family at Christmas, the two find their life together questioned. Catalina’s estrangement from her brother Alejandro becomes a prominent subject of conversation while Germán’s mother not only questions his career as a theater director / writer / manager, but also asks him to come work with her at her successful nail salon company. Moreover, she reminds him that his own father abandoned him because he could never find a path that brought stability to his family and doesn’t want Germán to make the same mistakes. Catalina decides to seek out Alejandro while German, in hopes of being the provider his father never was, talks to his theater partner Martina in hopes of expanding the business. Martina doesn’t take to the idea though she agrees to let Germán give it a shot on the condition that he work through his writer’s block to finish a play he has stalled on; after a successful first play, Germán’s second play was a flop and he is afraid that the third one will follow suit. Catalina is met with hostility as she reaches out to her brother’s friends, who reveal that Alejandro’s life was one of pain, suffering, and attempted suicide, while Germán finds himself constantly rebuffed in his business propositions. All the while, the couple stops engaging with one another, their relationship and even their baby becoming second to their other external concerns. Catalina eventually finds where his brother has been living and Germán gets a potential investor. However, Catalina finds out that her brother has left, prolonging her search. Meanwhile, Martina rejects the offer - the only thing the company needs is for him to reassume his passion for his art and take the artistic risks that made him a success in the first place. Germán realizes that Martina is right and appeals to Catalina to let go of her search and take back the life they had. To ignore the external pressures and continue to enjoy and thrive the way they did before the news of the pregnancy. To let the pregnancy be a moment for joy, not unnecessary stress. Catalina makes one more attempt to find her brother and does… or does she? Ultimately, she lets him fly away and returns to Germán to take back their life together.
