SYNOPSIS

‘Four Corners of Concrete’ is a gritty, character-driven film that follows Caleb Ulises, a dedicated gig-worker and recovering addict who’s desperate to reconnect with his estranged young daughter, Nina. When his vehicle and his sole means of income fails, Caleb must navigate the indifferent built environment, confronting isolation and destitution in this heartfelt quest for redemption.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

‘Four Corners of Concrete’ is born out of a desire to tell an intimate story about resilience in the face of systemic inequities. This is not just Caleb’s story—it’s a reflection of countless lives trapped within the cracks of a system that prioritizes isolation over connection and efficiency over empathy, forcing individuals to navigate a world designed to push them farther apart. The film draws from my observations of urban and suburban life: the relentless pace, the economic precarity, and the invisible struggles of individuals who are deemed expendable by a society obsessed with exploitation disguised as progress. Caleb’s journey—set against the backdrop of Westchester NY’s highways and strip malls—is a microcosm of the alienation that comes with being trapped in the now-thriving gig economy where every canceled ride or delayed order is a reminder of how close one can come to outright failure. As a filmmaker, I’m inspired by stories that balance raw, unflinching honesty with moments of quiet beauty and humanity. In ‘Four Corners of Concrete,’ the road is both a physical and emotional battleground for Caleb—his beaten-down car becomes a symbol of his fractured life and his desperate attempts to hold it all together. Amidst the chaos and exhaustion, hope can still be found. Caleb’s interactions with characters like Sammy, Gabriel, and Helen reflect the complexity of human relationships: the ways we can push each other down and lift one another up. Stylistically, the film will embrace a grounded, naturalistic aesthetic inspired by the textures and tones of filmmakers like the Dardenne brothers, Debra Granik, and Kelly Reichardt. I want the audience to feel the weight of every decision Caleb makes, the vibrations of every mile driven, and the sting of every missed opportunity. The sound design will amplify the constant hum of traffic and the oppressive rhythm of modern life, juxtaposed with quiet, intimate moments that offer small glimpses to Caleb’s inner world. Ultimately, ‘Four Corners of Concrete’ is a story of survival, redemption, and the power of human connection. It asks the audience to step into Caleb’s shoes and consider the ways in which we, as individuals and as a society, either perpetuate or challenge the systems that hold people like him down. My hope is that this film resonates on a deeply emotional level and inspires a conversation about dignity, resilience, and what it means to be truly seen in the unforgiving modern world.
