ARTISTIC STATEMENT

My quest for positive sapphic representation in film and television will never end. I’ve spent hours searching the internet for films that reflect my lived experience as a young queer woman. Not stories of pain, fear, manipulation, or coming out; but stories that show the softness, joy, and connection in a sapphic relationship. I often feel as if I have seen every movie and short film with queer women at the forefront. I hate to say that so few of them were worth my time. As I go into the film industry, I set out to change this experience by creating films centering positive representation of the lesbian community. My lived experience has also led me to be passionate about film set safety, specifically in intimate moments. Throughout my training to become an intimacy coordinator, the way I watch and make films has changed. The first thing an intimacy coordinator evaluates in a script is the context in which a scene fits and if it is relevant to tell a story. So often, intimate scenes are completely unnecessary and put there out of lust. My constant awareness of this has sparked a passion within me to show the tenderness and deep emotional storytelling that is possible within an intimate scene. When directing my capstone, both of these passions will be apparent and explored. This capstone project centers two young queer women moments after having sex. While sex is the setting, the film is not graphic. Instead, it pivots to explore the connection between the two women as one pushes the other to open up about her dark past. The conflict comes from a place of love and fear of losing each other. As they come together at the end, I intend for audiences to be left with a smile on their face and a tear in their eye.

KEY CREW

Katherine T Severin - Director

I am an intimacy coordinator, director, documentary filmmaker, & photographer driven by a deep commitment to authentic storytelling & empowering creativity. My lived experience has shaped not only the stories I tell but how I tell them. Through my work as an intimacy coordinator, I advocate for safer, more intentional film sets where every creative choice serves the story with respect and integrity. I believe that creativity & storytelling truly thrive when a crew feels comfortable being fully themselves. Whether I’m directing, photographing, or collaborating with others, my aim is always to cultivate spaces where artists feel inspired & where audiences feel seen. Outside of filmmaking, you can find me reading, traveling, & continuously seeking stories that haven’t yet been told.
