Thru: An Environmental History of the Appalachian Trail is a feature length documentary that explores the evolution of environmental thinking in America through the history of the Appalachian Trail and the terrain it traverses.
SYNOPSIS
Thru is a historical and observational documentary that will tell the story of the environmental history of the Appalachian Trail which runs 2,180 miles from Georgia to Maine over the craggy spine of a mountainous landscape where the many fits and starts and changing attitudes about environmentalism have developed.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT
Thru will include hikers on the Appalachian Trail, interviews with historians, writers and thinkers, music performed by residents of the mountains and surrounding valleys, and verité scenes of environmental action currently happening along the trail’s route. All will come together to tell the story of the creation and life of the Appalachian Trail, an unprecedented effort that combined federal, state, local, and volunteer organizations in a unified push towards a walking path that would serve as a beacon to generations of environmentalists.

Joshua Woltermann - Director
Joshua Woltermann has worked with some of best known and respected contributors in documentary film including Bill Moyers, Barak Goodman, John Maggio, Errol Morris, and Ric Burns. In 2010, he co-directed THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN with Michael Beach Nichols, which premiered at the Globians Doc Festival in Berlin. He co-produced the documentary FLEX IS KINGS which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. He has worked on films for PBS’s American Experience and most recently served as producer of Ric Burns’s ENQUIRING MINDS and on Michael Beach Nichols and Christopher K. Walker’s WELCOME TO LEITH which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
